Vowed Membership
A woman who desires to become a member of the Congregation does so through one of our Provinces or Vice Provinces. A period of discernment begins with candidacy and continues through a two-year novitiate. If a woman believes she has a vocation to live the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity (celibacy), and obedience and is declared ready for such a profession by the Sisters of St. Joseph, she makes a temporary profession of vows to live these evangelical counsels; later she makes a permanent profession.
Association
The Congregation invites both women and men to commit themselves to live by the charism or spirit of the Sisters by joining its programs for Associates (as it is called in Albany, St. Louis, and Los Angeles provinces); Consociates (St. Paul); `Ohana (Hawaíi); or Família de San José (Chile Mission). Persons interested in deepening their relationship with the Sisters in this way complete a program of guided discernment as candidates with the help of a Sister-companion. Following candidacy they make a formal commitment to take on the spirit of the Sisters' prayer life and dedication to love the neighbor without distinction, within the context of their own lives and responsibilities.
